Installation of new Dean of Tuam
The installation of the new Dean of Tuam, Very Reverend Ian Deighton Corbett, M.A., M. Sc., will take place in St. Mary's Cathedral, Tuam, on Wednesday, September 3rd. Residing in Cong, Dean Corbett will also be rector at St. Mary's, Cong.
Calling returned emigrants for T.V. series
A Dublin based TV production company, Meen Productions Limited, is looking for Mayo people who have recently returned home after living abroad for a few years. The film company wants them to take part in a six part series, 'Away and Home' to be broadcast on RTE in the Autumn. Those interested should contact David Walsh at 091-68298 or 01-6674935.
Cost of flood damage revealed
Costs amounted to practically £400,000 for road and bridge repairs and the clearance of blocked culverts as a result of the freak floods in the Erris area last month, according to documentation from the engineer division of Mayo County Council to the Minister of State, Dr. Tom Moffatt. Dr. Moffatt has made strong representations to Environment Minister, Mr. Noel Dempsey, for general funding to meet the repairs and general compensation for the residents affected by the storms and floods.
Commission 'denigrated' says Ring
The Western Commission has been effectively neutered by the Ahern Government, according to Mayo Dail Deputy, Mr. Michael Ring, T.D. He said: "The Commission has received not just one kick in the transom by its removal from the supreme authority of the Department of An Taoiseach to the Department of Agriculture, but it has received a further denigration by the failure of An Taoiseach Mr. Ahern to appoint a Minister for Western Development to success Donal Carey."
Moffatt welcomes funds
Dr. Tom Moffatt, T.D., Minister for Food Safety and Older People, has welcomed the announcement that an additional £5m. Has been approved for expenditure on discretionary maintenance works on local tertiary roads. The subvention granted to Mayo CountY Council under the allocation was £556,000.
Ballycroy fishermen get extra week
An extension of one week to the salmon season has been granted to the draft net fishermen at both the Ballycroy and Glenamoy rivers, Mr. Michael Ring, T.D., has been informed.
Bellacorrick station to remain open
The Bellacorrick Power Station will remain open beyond the year 2000, Mayo Dail Deputy Mr. Michael Ring has learned. Mr. Ring said it was ESB's intention to put forward firm proposals in regard to the future of the station. He was told by Mary O'Rourke, Minister for Public Enterprise, that current concerns about the future of the facility were premature.
