Knock plans on target

Development plans for the immediate hinterland of Knock Airport are taking shape, according to Mr. Cathal Duffy, the chairman of the Airport Board.

Mr. Duffy said they expected to be discussing the full picture towards the end of the year. In the meantime, he said, they would continue to focus on our core activities at the airport which are centred on providing the highest standards of overall passenger service.'

Despite the downturn in visitor numbers, Mr. Duffy said Knock Airport was having a good season.They expect to handle 195,000 passengers this year, which was in line with their projections.

The German and Swiss business into the base had showed an increase of 16% to date over the last year with three weeks still to go in the period.

Mr. Duffy added: "All of the airport services are being maintained to the highest international standards. I would like to pay tribute to my board colleagues, to all the management and staff at the airport, for the teamwork that has made Knock Airport the great success story it is today.

"The commercial success of the airport will continue to be the engine to drive further developments in the region."

 

Heritage Day Opening

Christ Church, Castlebar, one of the oldest buildings in the town, will be opened to the public as part of Heritage Day in Castlebar on Sunday September 14.

A cross-community committee has been established to raise £200,000 to carry out urgent renovations to the building, which was built in 1739. Members of the committee will be on hand on Sunday week to give guided tours of the Church and to accept any donations towards the renovation fund.

All are welcome to visit the church on that day.

 

Chamber of Commerce Council meeting

The executive Council of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce will this morning discuss the Information Age Town, an announcement on which is expected by the end of the month. They will also discuss the Tidy Towns Competition, the results of which will be announced on Monday.

Also on the agenda is the Christmas lights, a membership drive and the second annual Customer Care and Service Awards as well as arrangements for the forthcoming annual general meeting.

 

Sean joins executive council

Mr. Sean McEvoy, a Fine Gael member of Mayo County Council has been elected to the Executive Committee of the General Council of County Councils, following the organization's annual meeting in Dublin.

The General Council is a national body which represents the 34 county councils and city corporations in Ireland.

Mr. McEvoy joins thirteen others on the Executive Committee which oversees the operation of the General Council and formulates policies aimed at strengthening the role of local government.

 

Sr. Stanislaus for Knock

Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy will give the keynote address at the Vincentian Family celebration and re-dedication, to mark the beatification of the founder of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, Frederic Ozanam, at St. John's Rest & care Centre, Knock Shrine on Saturday September 13 at 11.30a.m.

The theme for her address will be Justice today in Irish society.
