Moves are underway to close off Knock Airport as a potential gateway to Ireland for drug smugglers.
The airport board is teaming up with the National Drugs Team to prevent illegal substances from being brought into the country through the base. The crackdown is part of a new initiative being introduced at regional airports.
Mr. Cathal Duffy, chairman of Knock Airport Board, has welcomed the proposal. He will sign an agreement with Mr. Liam Hurley, director of the National Drugs Team, at Knock Airport today (Wednesday) to bring the plan into immediate effect.
