Curragh appeal successful
James King has been successful in his appeal to An Bord Pleanala against the decision of Castlebar Urban Council to refuse planning permission for a domestic garage at the Orchard, The Curragh.
Invitation to County Manager call
A call is being made on Castlebar Urban Council to extend an invitation to Mayo County Manager, Mr. Des Mahon, to attend the October meeting of the authority to discuss matters of mutual concern.
Mr. Eoin Garavan, a member of the council, has submitted a motion on the matter for consideration at Thursday's meeting of the authority.
He said there was a number of traffic related issues to be addressed as well as the proposed enlargement of the urban boundary.
Two proposals refused
Castlebar Urban Council has refused planning permission to Sean Bourke for two developments in the town.
His first application related to the construction of four office\shop units at The Curragh.The second was an application for a temporary office at the Curragh.
Go-ahead for developments
Five new developments have been given the go-ahead by Castlebar Urban Council. They are as follows.
- Pitch and putt course at Knockaphunta [Western Health Board].
- Accommodation signs, fingerpost type, at the Curragh [Rory & Mary McRandall].
- Demolish existing dwelling and construction of five apartments at Upper Charles Street [J. Skeffington].
- E.S.B. substation and switch room at Shamble Square [Dunnes Stores].
- Entrance to retail unit fort tyre sales\carparking at Gorteendrunagh [Joseph Togher].
New applications lodged
A number of new planning applications have been lodged with Castlebar Urban Council.
- Extension to 24, St. Patrick's Avenue [S. McDonnell].
- Industrial unit and workshop at Gorteendrunagh [F. Czerski].
- Extension to 2, Rowan Drive [D. McCarthy].
- Outline permission house at 33, The Curragh, Castlebar [B. Brosnan]. This application has been declared invalid'.
- Boundary wall at 19, Cashel Park [J.J. O'Reilly].
Calvary Winter training
The 5th Motor Squad (F.C.A.) will begin Winter training on Tuesday, September 23rd, at 8.00p.m. in the Military Barracks. New recruits are welcome to attend.
Council to meet E.S.B.
A delegation representing the E.S.B. will meet members of Castlebar Urban Council at Marsh House on Thursday at 7.00p.m.
They will make a presentation to the council regarding their future plans for the Castlebar area. The meeting was organised by Mr. Blackie Gavin, chairman of the council.
Amateur Radio Classes
A series of night class on amateur radio will commence at Davitt College, Castlebar, at the end of September.
The classes, which will run for approximately 26 weeks, are being held under the auspices of the Department of Communications. For further information contact 094-61027. (Please do not contact the college directly.)
Camera Club come of age
Castlebar Camera Club holds a meeting on Thursday next, September 11th, at 8.30 pm in the club room at the top floor of the Social Services Centre, Castle Street carpark,Castlebar.
The 1997\98 season marks the club's 21st anniversary and intensive planning is afoot to make the coming of age an event to remember. One of the early season highlights is a six-night basic photography course which gets underway on Thursday, September 25th, at 8.00 pm.
The programme of the course is as follows. September 25th: Learn how to get the best from your camera. An expert will be in attendance to give advise on all aspects of taking photographs. October 2nd: Family photography, how to improve your shots by daylight and flash. October 9th: Holiday pictures. . .the do's and don'ts. October 16th: Develop your first black and white film. October 23rd: Make your first black and white print. October 30th: Landscape and special events, how to get the best possible results.
If your feel unsure with your camera, are a complete newcomer to the hobby or have not used your camera for many years and would like to get back in the swing, you are invited to join the basic course which only costs £20. Should you decide to join the club, the fee will be an extra £10 to cover membership until September 1998.
The club's steering committee are including a monthly competition on a variety of topics during the season with prints going on display in the club for the month between rounds.
Plans are underway to have two of the club photographs take part in a swap with Ballymena to depict their annual festival with two members of the Ballymena Club doing likewise at the Castlebar Festival of the Senses. This will lead to a joint exhibition of the results in both towns.
In line with tradition, members will participate in other club's competitions, as well as regional and national events.
It is hoped to have the usual quote of talks, slide shows and demonstrations by experts from Ireland and further afield.
Caisleann Aeracht take silver at All-Ireland Fleadh
The Caisleann Aeracht Under-12 Ceili Band came second in the Ceili Band competition at Fhleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Ballina.Taking Connaught and Mayo titles along the way, it was the icing on the cake of a very successful year for the group. In fact, it was the successful year since the foundation of the group a number of years ago.
Group leader John Kilkenny thanked all the musicians and their parents for their support during the year. He said the members had come a long way in a short period of time and the potential was there for further success in the years ahead.
He dedicated the success of the group to the late Martin Donoghue.
Water Polo News
The coming season will be an historic one for the sport of water polo in Castlebar. The local club has entered a team in the Leinster (Under-14) Boys League and may yet enter another in the Under-16 Boys Cup competition.
Lack of organised regular competition in Connaught at this age level led castlebar to seek affiliation to the Leinster League.
Training takes place every Sunday at 1.00p.m. and newcomers are invited to become involved.
Died in Co. Cavan
The death has taken place in Bailieboro, Co. Cavan, of Dr. Eugene McDonagh. He was father of Mr. John McDonagh, Rocklands, Castlebar.
Death of Missionary
Missionary priest, Fr. Michael McFadden, S.M.A., has died. He was a native of Newline, Castlebar.
Many tributes have been paid to the deceased following a life dedicated to the welfare of others in the poorer parishes of the world.
Katie leaves club
The members of Castlebar Swimming Club were saddened to learn of the imminent departure of Katie Holland from Castlebar to Dublin.
Katie, a very successful competitive swimmer, has been a very faithful and devoted member of the club since first learning to swim many years ago.
She is wished every success with her studies in Dublin, as well as with her new swimming club, Templeogue.
Death of Arthur Noonan
The death in Achill of former national political journalist, Arthur Noonan, was deeply mourned in Castlebar.
The deceased was based in the town for many years after taking up his first newspaper appointment with the Mayo News back in early 1950s. He was a brother of Mrs. Sadie Fadden, Upper Charles Street; and Mrs. Joan Conway, Springfield, Castlebar.
Died in Athleague
The death has taken place in Athleague of Mrs. Bridget Lyons. She was mother of Mr. John Lyons, Aglish Estate, Castlebar.

Innisbiggle passing
Mrs. Mary McManamon, Innisbiggle Island, Achill, whose death has taken place, was mother of Mr. John McManamon, 98 Riverdale Court, Castlebar.
Boxing Club back on duty
Castlebar Boxing Club is open for new members.
Training take place at the gym, the Mall, on Monday and Friday evenings at 7.30. Boys must be at least 11 years of age before being accepted for training.
Coaches on duty for the season include Martin Corcoran, head coach, Declan Corcoran, Tony Gray, Paddy Gannon, Kanneth Roach and Peter Carroll.

Castlebar Boxing Club were responsible for a very innovative display of coaching and sparring during the recent presentaion of Castlebar's bid for the Information Age Town. Judging was by a points system on an electronic computer.
An interested visitor to the display was local Dail Deputy Beverley Cooper Flynn who used the computer to judge one of the sparring sessions.
