Former double All-Ireland senior football championship winning star Padraig Carney has been honoured in his home county. The California-based medical director received a civic welcome from Mayo County Council on Monday. . .46-years after he won his second All-Ireland title with Mayo.

Dr. Carney, who became known as 'the flying doctor' when he flew home from America to play for Mayo in the semi-final of the National League in 1954, said he was overjoyed by the honour bestowed upon him.

"The county of Mayo has come on significantly since I left it back in the fifties. I see a tremendous future for this area."

Dr. Carey said he has great hopes of Mayo lifting the Sam Maguire Cup when they face Kerry in the final on Sunday.

"It will not be easy. But I think Mayo are a physically stronger side," he added.
