The dispute over rural water in Mayo is close to a resolution.

Mayo County Council is thrashing out an agreement with the Federation of Group Water Schemes in a determined bid to end the row once and for all.

According to Mr. Tim Mullen, county finance officer, a number of adjustments had been made to their earlier demands which appeared to be more acceptable to the federation members. He confirmed the council would still have to bear a loss of over £2m. in revenue as a result of the dispute.

"We have adopted a very fair approach and we are prepared to talk to any group scheme with a particular difficulty. But it is important the matter is resolved for the benefit of both the council and group water schemes throughout the county."

Council reject presidential move

Mayo County Council rejected a proposal to nominate Victim Support campaigner Derek Nally for the post of president of Ireland. The move was turned down by 25 votes to three at Monday's special meeting of the authority.

Mr. Padraig Cosgrove said he was disappointed the council did not give him the opportunity to formally propose Mr. Nally for the presidency.

The Belmullet -based councillor won support in his stand from Mr. Richard Finn and Mr. Johnny Mee. But the other members in attendance opposed the idea.

Woman cyclist injured near Charlestown

Gardai will interview some German tourists this week to determine whether a woman found injured beside her bicycle on the Charlestown/Swinford road at the weekend was the victim of a hit and run.

The woman, who is from the Charlestown area, is recovering at Mayo General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Gardai now believe the car involved in a fatal hit and run at Sandyhill, Charlestown last month is now believed to be a Nissan/Micra. This has been established from car parts found at the scene.

The man who died was Mr. Luke Gilligan from Curry, County Sligo.
