A COMMUNITY group in Achill is demanding a special ministerial order to scrap the seaside resort scheme which they claim will destroy the unique attraction of the island in the near future.

Mr. Sean Cannon, a member of Cairde which is opposed to the development of an 18 cottage development at Curraune, said the scheme was only benefiting people from outside the area with big incomes and who were seeking tax reliefs.

He explained: "Proposals like the one in Curraune would mean that rental incomes from tourists will not stay in the area in the way it currently does.

"It would instead go to high rate tax payers from outside the area who can claim maximum tax relief."

Mr. Cannon called for the legislation to be changed to anable local families secure grant aid in developing their own tourism businesses.

"This would have far more long term benefits for the island and would help local people wity their plans for the provision of such facilities as indoor amenities, a swimming pool and improved hotel accommodation."

Meanwhile, Rehab Institute have denied any involvement in the proposed cottage development at Curraune which is at the centre of a long running controversy.

Mr. Frank Burke, regional director, said his organisation was not in any way associated with the proposal to provide a holiday village for the handicapped at the location..
