Castlebar Chamber Annual meeting
THE annual general meeting of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce will be held in Daly's Hotel on Monday night (8.30p.m.) when a highly successful year will be reviewed by president Mr. Frank Greene.
Members of the towns commercial and industrial sector are invited to attend as new members are always welcome.
There are several sub-committees, among them retail, tourism, industrial, tidy towns and Christmas lights, where members can become involved.
Funeral of Mr. John Connelly, Lehinch, Hollymount
THE father of Mayo All-Ireland final captain Noel Connelly was laid to rest in his native Hollymount last week. Mr. John Connelly, from Hollymount, died in the intensive care unit of Mayo General Hospital. He was in his early seventies.
A father of nine, Mr. Connelly had been seriously ill for over a week and was unable to watch his son play in the All-Ireland final. He is survived by his wife, Mai; daughters, Mary Assumpta and Ann; sons, Michael, Tom Noel, Kevin, Raymond and Oliver.
Charlestown Crimeline reconstruction
A CRIMELINE TV team is to stage a reconstruction of a fatal hit-and-run outside Charlestown last August in which a 53-year old man was killed.
Mr. Luke Gilligan of Curry, Co. Sligo died on the morning of August 9 while walking at Sandyhill after being hit by a vehicle which failed to stop.
Gardai have drawn a total blank in their enquiries and are not to film a reconstruction in order to jog memories
Turtle caught in Clew Bay
A RARE 600 lb leatherback turtle was caught in crab pots in Clew Bay by Inishturk fisherman Mick O'Toole.
It appears the turtle, which measured 2 metres in length and had a span of 2.1 metres, became entangles in the pots which were set between Old Head and Mulranny and was unable to free itself.
North Mayo Radar station opening
THE MINISTER fro Sate at the Department of Public Enterprise, Mr. Joe Jacob will officially open the new Irish Aviation Authority radar station at Dooncarton, Pullathomas on Monday morning.
The station will provide improved radar coverage for the north-west approaches to Ireland and for the North Connaught and Donegal areas.
