Foxford exhibition
Foxford Exhibition Centre is the location for a new exhibition of work by artist Isabel Brady. Isabel, a UK citizen, now living in Ireland, has been painting landscapes and portraits for over 25 years.
She studied Art and Architecture at Margaret St. College of Art in Birmingham. She has had many successful one-woman exhibitions in England, Ireland and Germany. Many of her pictures have ben sold in America and Spain.
In 1988, one of her pictures was hung in the Royal Hibernian Academy of Art, Dublin.
The exhibition will be officially opened on Friday at 9p.m. and will run until November 19. The exhibition centre us open Monday to Friday from 11a.m. to 5p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 2p.m. to 5p.m.
NCF celebrate 25th anniversary
The North Connacht Farmers Co-Operative Society Ltd (NCF) celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the organisation with a gala celebration function in the Travellers Friend Hotel, Castlebar this Friday night.
The guest of honour for the occasion will be EU Commissioner, Mr. Padraig Flynn. The event gets underway at 8.30p.m.
Need for Kiltimagh-Dublin Bus link highlighted
Fine Gael TD and Justice, Equality and Law Reform spokesman, Mr. Jim Higgins has called on Bus Eireann to introduce a bus service between Kiltimagh and Dublin.
Deputy Higgins said: "I think it is amazing that a town the size of Kiltimagh does not have any bus service linking it with Dublin.
"I cannot see why some of the existing bus services cannot be re-routed to take in Kiltimagh."
He said the situation was compounded by virtue of the fact that there is no direct bus link between Kiltimagh and the train stations at Ballyhaunis of Claremorris.
The existing bus from Kiltimagh to Cork goes via Claremorris but arrives too late to link up with the Claremorris-Dublin early morning train.
Farmers Tax clearance crux
FARMERS have been advised to ensure their tax clearance certificates are up to date and in order or they could be denied grants they are entitled to.
The warning has come from Deputy Michael Ring, the Fine Gael spokesman on Livestock Breeding and Horticulture who has questioned Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh on the matter.
Minister Walsh pointed out that under existing Government regulations tax clearance certificates were required for national grant, subsidies and similar type payments by public bodies and he had no intention of changing the situation.
Deputy Ring said that for farmers the bottom line was that they had to keep the paperwork on their tax situation up to date.
Impact of youth vote highlighted
Over 11,400 young people from Mayo are eligible to vote in the Presidential Election on October 30.
The National Youth Council of Ireland has launched a campaign to encourage them to cast their ballot.
Between now and polling day leaflets will be distributed throughout the country highlighting the potential impact the youth vote could have on the election.
Chairman to launch Mayo People of the Year awards
The Chairman of Mayo County Council, Mr. Pat Kilbane will officially launch the Mayo people of The Year Awards in Ballyhaunis tonight (Wednesday).
The presentations are organised annually by Rehab in conjunction with AIB Bank and the Connaught Telegraph and the launching will take place in the Hazel Lounge at 8.30p.m.
In all seven awards winners will be selected, including one overseas nomination, and the presentations will take place on Friday November 28 in Hotel Westport..
The list of award winners will be announced on November 13.
Sergeant bereaved
SYMPATHY is extended to Sergt. Barry Foley, Castlebar on the death of his father, Mr. Michael Foley, which took place at Swinford District Hospital.
The later Mr. Foley, Sonnagh, Charlestown and formerly of Coolcastle, Callow was buried in Killasser cemetery after Requiem Mass in All Saints Church, Killasser on Monday.
He is survived by his wife, sons, daughters and relatives.
Swinford team on Blackboard Jungle
A TEAM from Scoil Muire agus Padraig in Swinford will feature on the Network Two Blackboard Jungle quiz on Monday at 7p.m. when they take on Cabinteely Community School, Dublin.
The Swinford team consists of Karen Crawley, Helen Murtagh and peter Scully.
Leukaemia Apple Day
The Leukaemia trust Apple day takes place throughout Galway, Mayo and Roscommon on Friday.
All proceeds go towards the fight against cancer and Leukaemia in the West of Ireland and people are urged to buy an apple badge for £1.
The Leukaemia Trust was formed in 1995 to raise funds for the cancer and Leukaemia treatment centre for the west of Ireland, based in University College Hospital, Galway.
The aim of the trust is to initially raise £1,000,000 to develop the facilities and programmes associated with patient treatment, research and education.
Tidy Towns prizes
THE Chairman of mayo County Council, Mr. Pat Kilbane will present the prizes in the Castlebar Tidy Towns Awards at a function in Daly's Hotel, Castlebar on Friday evening at 8.30p.m.
It is being run by the Castlebar Tidy Towns Committee in conjunction with Castlebar Chamber of Commerce..
NCF anniversary dinner
A record seven hundred people will attend the 25th anniversary dinner of NCF which will be held in the Travellers Friend Hotel, Castlebar on Friday night.
The guests will be treated to a five course meal, the largest gastronomical splurge of its kind to be staged in Connaught.
The guest of honour for the evening will be EU Commissioner, Mr. Padraig Flynn.
