Former exile contesting County Board post
GAA
29 October 1997
By Tom Kelly
A man who helped rescue the London County GAA Board from financial problems has been nominated for the position of treasurer of the Mayo County GAA Board.
Tom Goonan has been nominated by Kiltane GAA Club to contest the post of treasurer left vacant by the resignation of John Kenny who is moving to take up a similar role with the Connaught GAA Council.
Mr. Goonan was treasurer of the London Board for almost a decade before returning to his native Bangor three years ago. His is the only nomination to date for the position, nominations for which close on Saturday, November 8th.
Most attention at the annual convention in Louisburgh on December 9th will focus on the election of chairman to succeed Noel Forde who is stepping down.
The names of P.J. McGrath, Claremorris, and Paddy
Naughton, Knockmore, were submitted to Sean Feeney, county
board secretary, before he departed for a brief holiday in
America. But Castlebar
-based Willie Joe Padden confirmed he would be nominated
by his club, Belmullet,
in the coming days.
