Dunnes Stores £1m. extension delayed until New Year

Work on the £1m extension to Dunnes Stores in Castlebar has slowed down and will not be open in time for the Christmas Shopping rush.

The delay is linked to the supermarket's involvement in a new business venture in England. They have opened a textiles and homeware store in Northamption as part of a new growth strategy.

The chain is also planning to open a similar store in Swords, Co. Dublin, fuelling speculation that Dunnes will be putting renewed emphasis on the textile and homewares end of business in stores throughout the country.

Mrs. Margaret Heffernan, managing director of Dunnes Stores, has been directly involved in the negotiations in England. As a result, her sanctioning was awaited for the final phase of work at the Castlebar complex.

Local contracting firm, Mountain View Securities Limited, completed the initial stage of the project ahead of schedule.

The firm has won the contract for the electrical and other interior work. The extension is not expected to be completed until January.
