Hospital's £20m. extension to commence next Spring

By Tom Kelly

The £20m phase two development at Mayo General Hospital is to get underway next spring, it has been announced.

The three-year development plan will incorporate a new orthopaedics theatre and 33-bed associated ward, requiring the appointment of two orthopaedic surgeons.

All patient accommodation will be provided in a proposed new building and it will house a number of apartments, including accident and emergency, obstetrics, pathology and psychiatry.

Other facilities being provides are a medical daycare unit, a conference hall and education centre.

Phase one of the development was completed in 1990.

Mr. Michael Fahey, the project co-ordinator, said Mayo General Hospital would be one of the most modern in the countRy when the project was completed in and around the year 2000.

Mr. Fahy confirmed that formal invitation of tenders had been issued this week.

He explained the general practitioners throughout the region had voiced concern in the past at having to refer all trauma patients from rural Mayo in need of orthopaedic treatment to Merlin Park Hospital in Galway.

"I have heard it a million times from GP representatives who are disgusted that they have to refer orthopaedic patients to Galway for treatment.

"There is no doubt that 50 miles iS a long journey to make for an old person with a broken femur."
