Ballyglass are taking nothing for granted

By Tom Kelly

Ballyglass will win the Mayo League Premier Division championship for the third time in the club's history at home on Sunday if they defeat Claremorris in the concluding match of the series.

They are lying two points behind Achill Rovers who completed their campaign with 39 points from eighteen matches. Only a victory will be good enough to ensure Ballyglass of retaining the title.

Interestingly, a win would put them on 40 points, two less than the tally which captured the title for them last season with a point to spare over Urlaur United. If Ballyglass achieve their objective, few can argue that they did not deserve it.

In the second round of the series, they picked up a total of twenty points out of a possible 24 with six wins and two draws.

At the same time, Achill Rovers, who had led Ballyglass by 11 points at the end of August, dropped eight points in their concluding five rounds.

On current form, the prospects are looking good for Ballyglass.

BIG TEST

But they are taking nothing for granted against a Claremorris side without any pressure on them.

Said Joe Sheridan, club secretary: "We cannot afford to let our concentration drop. It is a big test of our character and determination."

Ballyglass are scoring at will at the moment. They registered 14 goals in their last two games against Ballaghaderreen and Swinford in the F.A.I. Junior Cup and Connaught Junior Cup, respectively.

But they are likely to be without their top scorer, Kevin Connolly, for Sunday's clash.

Connolly, who has 17 league goals to his credit, has been out for the past number of weeks with a knee injury.

Also doubtful is Kenny Staunton who was taken off with an injury in the win over Swinford on Sunday last.

The match could mark Kevin Ring's final game in Claremorris colours. He is expected to join Connaught Senior League side, Manulla, following the match.

Claremorris lost Kevin's brother, Stephen, to Ballyglass at the beginning of the Mayo League season, and that will add a touch of spice to Sunday's confrontation.

Ballyglass should win. . .but you can never be sure in the Premier Division of the Mayo League.
