FOR TUAM KILLALA & ACHONRY
A Church of Ireland Electoral College meeting in Armagh has elected as the new Bishop of Tuam, Killala & Achonry the Very Reverend Doctor Richard Henderson, currently Dean of Ross, Co. Cork in succession to Right Reverend John Neill who has transferred to the Diocese of Cashel. Dean Henderson is aged 40, is married to Anita (nee Whiting), and they have three children, Cicely, 9; Pippa, 7; and Jack aged 5. His consecration as Bishop will be in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh in January, after which he will be installed in the Cathedral of St Mary's, Tuam, and St Patrick's, Killala. The new Bishop was ordained in 1986 for the Diocese of Oxford, and served as Curate in Chinnor with Emmington and Sydenham until 1989 when he moved to Ireland as Rector of Abbeystrewry Union, Skibberreen, Co. Cork until 1995, when he became Dean of Ross and rector of Ross Union. He was a Canon of Ross Cathedral and St Fin Barre's Cathedral, Cork from 1993 until 1995, and holds the Prebendary of St Fin Barre's Cathedral. Educated in Westminster School, London, Magdalen College, Oxford and St John's College, Nottingham, later obtaining a BA in Botany (Oxon. 1979) and Doctorate in Philosophy (Oxon. 1983) on the thesis "The Genetics and Applications of Copper Resistance in Yeast". He passed with distinction the Diploma in Theology at University of Nottingham, 1984, and obtained a Diploma in Pastoral Studies at St John's College, Nottingham. Dean Henderson has a passion for working with his hands, mostly in woodwork and engineering metal work. He plays piano, organ and recorder, especially the music of J S Bach, reads English literature and a wide range of technical books, and enjoys gardening and building. He has tought music in Darjeeling, been an indoor plant decorator, a self-employed cabinet maker and biotechnology adviser to Andry Montgomery Ltd, which mounts trade exhibitions. He has served on most diocesan committees within the Diocese of Cork, and has conducted Quiet Days, Retreats and the like. He is interested in the pastoral care of those whose faith changes, the marriage of science and Christianity, devotional exegesis of the scriptures, and preaching and teaching the faith. |
