John Melvin Mayo, a county not averse itself to controversy involving managers, could earn two very soft points in Section A of the National Football League if Carlow don't sort out their problems before Sunday, ahead of the final pre-Christmas National League tie scheduled for Charlestown. Matters came to a head at the weekend when Carlow manager Bobby Millar resigned following a row with the County Board who disbanded the Carlow Supporters club. It appears money is once again the root of all evil, even in Carlow with the County Board claiming no funds had been handed over by the Supporters club. The players are apparently backing Millar to the hilt, and in a showdown with the County Board, have refused to play unless he is reinstated. Playing power at it's most devastating. It appears there has been a row blowing with the Carlow County Board and he Supporters club and Millar openly criticised the County Board last week over their handling of certain matters. A meeting was to be held last night in Carlow to sort out matters head of Sunday's national league tie against Mayo at Charlestown which could be under threat. Carlow are still without a win in the League but they could be without a team unless matters are resolved as soon as possible. Their last outing was against Louth when they were beaten by 1-15 to 2-9, Colm Hayden, their top gun at full of war scoring 2-8 for them. Meantime Mayo, who are level on 5 points with Laois, are still chasing league leaders Louth who have full points. Mayo are likely to be testing out players that played in Kilkenny and we can expect to see Dave Tiernan, Ger McNicholas, Sean Roughneen and Gordon Morley given another run. Dave Heaney looked in could shape while playing for Swinford on Sunday and is likely to be named at full back with Ray Connelly, Pat Holmes and Fergal Costello lining out in defence. The services of basketball-tied Liam McHale are unlikely to be called don while David Brady is expected to start at midfield where he could team up again with the impressive Ger McNicholas and Pat Fallon could also be called in for a pre-Christmas run while up front Kieran McDonald will be leading the attack where we are likely to see a number of new faces, and where Colm McManamon will be hoping to produce a dashing display similar to that in Kilkenny. Another two points will put Mayo in a strong position with this being the last game going into the Christmas break. |
