People of the Year

On MWR MID-WEST Radio will broadcast from the Mayo People of The Year Awards banquet in Hotel Westport from 10pm to 11pm on Friday night.

Michael Commins will present the show and he will be speaking to all the award winners as well as the organisers and their guests.

Tanaiste to open Castlebar APC plant

Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms. Mary Harney will perform the official opening of the American Power Conversion Corporation's new facility at Breaffy Road, Castlebar on Monday December 8 at 3.30pm

B&W pudding award

DEMPSEY MEATS, Castlebar have again taken an award for their famous black and white puddings. The award was won at the Connaught finals of the competition which were held recently in Galway.

President to visit Cheshire Home

PRESIDENT Mary McAleese will make her first official visit, since her inauguration, to Mayo today. She will visit the O'Dwyer Cheshire Home, Bohola at 2.40pm and thirty-five minutes later she will call at the IRD offices in Kiltimagh.

England full back has Ballyhaunis roots

THE newly capped full back of the England rugby team, Matt Perry has Ballyhaunis connections. His grandmother, Shelia Ganley from Ballyhaunis, and now in her eighties, has lived most of her life in Bath.

Both Shelia and her brother Bill have been regular visitors to Ballyhaunis to see their nephew Michael Greally, Drimbane.

Renewal blow to Ballyhaunis?

THERE is serious concern in Ballyhaunis and throughout Mayo over reports that no town with a population of over 6,000 will qualify for the new urban renewal scheme which is to come into effect next August.

Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce has major plans for a new Enterprise Centre in the town and the decision, if confirmed, will have implications for the project.

Chamber spokesperson, Mary Smyth says the Chamber will lobby support in other towns in the region to fight what she described as an "unjust" decision

Swinford break-ins

GARDAI in Swinford are investigating break-ins to the local Church and primary school over the weekend. Some damage was caused to collection boxes in the Church and obscenities were scrawled on walls in the school building.

Castlebar lights switch-on

CHIEF SUPT. John Carey, head of the Mayo Garda Division will officially switch on the Castlebar Christmas lights on Friday evening (6pm) at Gavin's Coffee Shop, Main Street. Chief Supt.

Carey has been asked by Castlebar Chamber of Commerce to perform the switch-on as part of the celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the force.

Santa will be in attendance as usual.
