A retired senior Garda in Mayo was arrested last week and transferred to Sligo Town, where he faced charges of sexual assault and indecent assault on young people over a 14 year period. The man cannot be named for legal reasons. He was arrested in a Garda swoop on his home early on Thursday morning last. The alleged offences relate to the period 1972 to 1976 when the accused was a senior officer in the Mayo area. The public were excluded when the matter was brought before Sligo District Court. Garda Inspector Bernard Lyden called for the exclusion of the press from the case in the interest of the victims who, he said, were young at the time and might be identified. Evidence of arresting the accused was given by Garda John Nicholson . The accused made no reply when the charges were put to him. The accused was remanded on his own bail of £100, plus an independent surety of £1,000, to appear at Sligo District Court on January 8th. The Judge allowed for an extension of time for the serving of the Book of Evidence. The Garda have indicated they expect the Book of Evidence to be ready for the January hearing.
