The Castlebar Parish Magazine, one of the most sought-after publications of the year, has gone on sale.

The magazine, which has become an integral part of the community over the past 26 years, is destined to be a sell-out once again.

Edited by the indefatigable Johnny Mee, a historian in his own right, the publication contains all the traditional features which have become so popular since the magazine was launched in 1971.

In his editorial, Mr. Mee lauded the work of those involved in the Information Age Town project.

"Their efforts instilled in the community a realisation that we have people in the town with great entrepreneurial spirit, initiative and civic spirit.

"There are many other voluntary groups in Castlebar working for the progress and development of the town. They are the real heroes and heroines in the community."

In his address, Mr. Blackie Gavin, chairman, Castlebar Urban Council, gives a broad outline of the phenomenal growth of Castlebar.

"Castlebar is a fast developing town located in an area rich in heritage, history, scenery and tradition."

The content of the magazine succeeds in reviving good memories of times past in Castlebar, not to mention the numerous colourful characters the town produced over the years.

The contributors include Johnny Mee, Joe Redmond, Tom Kelly, Sean Rice, Sean Lyons, Michael Feeney, Keith Bourke, Agnes Staunton, Angela Corcoran, Michael Brett, Peter Killeen, Willie McNeely, Frank Murphy, Padraic McDonald, Bernie Murphy, Bernard Hughes, Ernie Sweeney, Oliver Neary and Paddy Kilroy.

There is a detailed list of the births, deaths and marriages registered in the parish during 1997, as well as a wide range of old photographs never previously published.

The front page is graced by a colour photograph, by the incisive Tom Campbell, of barber Sean Kelly of Castle Street who celebrated 50 years in the job earlier this year.

On the back cover is a colour shot, also by Mr. Campbell, of the famous Byrne's Babes.

All told, a splendid production to which the printing staff of the Connaught Telegraph have done supreme justice.

Available at all local newsagents, it retails at £2.50.
