County Council gets 'Excellence through People' FAS Award

MAYO COUNTY COUNCIL is the first Irish local authority to be awarded the "Excellence Through People" award which is organised by FAS.

The awards recognise organisations which aim for excellence by concentrating on training, developing and involving people at all levels in the organisation's core business.

Mayo County Manager, Mr. Des Mahon said the award suited a local authority perfectly and the council was delighted to be the first local authority to meet the stringent qualifications required by FAS.

Mr. Mahon added: "Having the right people with the right training is the only way we can make sure we have the expertise to carry out the huge infra structural water, sewerage and roads projects a county the size of Mayo needs."

Mayo is Ireland's third largest county, with a population that is scattered over its length and breadth.

Mr. Mahon added: "One way we can measure our success as an organisation is by the way people in Mayo react when they come looking for services or have contact with us by letter or phone.

"If they feel we really listen to them and if they know they will be treated fairly by whoever they are dealing with in Mayo County Council, we are doing our job well.

"To get the best out of our staff, so they can deliver the highest standards of service, we have to invest heavily in training and staff development.

"There is no short-cut to achieve the standards of excellence we aspire to."

Mayo County Council will invest more than half-a-million pounds next year on developing staff at all levels of the organisation.

It's more than 3% of wage costs and compares favourable with the average 1% spent by Irish companies on training.
