It is generally accepted that Mayo has a rich and varied heritage. However the old image of dull and dusty history has been given a new lease of life.

Castlebar based Tales and History of Ireland has recently introduced a new and modern concept in the presentation of local history. THI have produced a local history "Streetcape " on audio cassette.

A spokesman for the company explained "We are faced with a growing concern that our culture, especially local history will be lost to modern generations.

We need to present history in a modern upbeat format. In our research we have discovered the entire gamut of characters adventure and yet great sadness. Our first presentation looks back at the origins of Castlebar through some of the streets and we have only scratched the surface.

THI intends to produce additional cassettes from material sources from throughout the county.

By adopting this cassette presentation format local history may no appeal to local interest groups and the tourism market. However the major market will undoubtedly be Mayo sons and daughters scattered throughout the world.

THI products will be launched on the Internet from January, 1998.

Tales and History of Ireland is indeed a real Mayo production. The narration team has been joined by Davitt College students Orla Cunningham and Siobhan Howard.

Visual impact is responsible for the impressive art and design. The recording facilities are provided by Westlink Studios, Claremorris based Mayo on the Move are Internet providers.
