By Tom Kelly A top level review is taking place of Mayo's fire fighting service. The blueprint will identify ways of improving the service throughout the county. The study is being conducted by a team headed by Chief Fire Officer, Seamus Murphy. It is hoped to publish the results of their findings early in the New Year. But the dossier will be first presented to the members of Mayo County Council for their observations. There is a general consensus that Mayo has one of the best trained and best equipped fire fighting teams in the country. But Mr. Murphy is anxious that greater investment be made in the service over the coming years. Some criticism had been aired over the facilities in place at Knock following a recent tragedy which claimed three members of the one family. Special funding will be sought early in 1998 for the purchase of fire appliances used by units throughout the county. They are urgently needed to replace existing equipment which has become outdated. An order has also been placed for the installation and commissioning of a new Alerting System for the county's fire service. The system is being installed to support the operations of the CAMP West project, the control centre for which is expected to be fully operational in Castlebar before the end of 1998.
