Eerie happenings have been taking place at Government buildings in Castlebar.

Members of the staff at Davitt House have reported sightings of a supernatural being in the corridors and offices of the centre.

The unearthly presence has been detected over a considerable period.

The ghost is reported to wear an Aran sweater and a hat with its brim turned down.

The appearance of the 'spirit' coincided with major development works which have been ongoing at the complex since early last year.

The extension is being constructed on lands which were at one time owned by the infamous Lord Lucan, and adjacent to a fairy fort.

Mr. Sean McDonagh, porter at Davitt House which handles million of pounds in headage payments annually on a national basis, said: "Over half a dozen people have seen the strange visitor in recent times.

"But when they followed it into several offices, it just disappeared into thin air.

"The ghost has also been heard coughing and making other noises in the building.

"The situation has become so serious that some female staff members are reluctant to walk the corridors alone, particularly after dark."

The most recent sighting took place on Saturday last when strange noises were heard emanating from an unoccupied portion of the building.

Mr. McDonagh said it was time that the authorities got to the bottom of the uncanny occurrences and put an end to people's fears once and for all.
