There was an air of pride and determination, tinged with controlled emotion, at the launch of the Michael Heffernan Memorial Trust Fund in Ballina last week. Relatives of the late Michael , or "Heffo" as he was known to his friends, joined his former diving colleagues from the Grainne Uaile Sub-Acqua Club, Gardai, lifeboat personnel and others who had assisted during the fateful events of October 25th last. Josie Barrett, who survived through sheer good fortune on the night, was there also to colleagues from the Grainne Uaile Sub Acqua Club; Gardai and lifeboat personnel who had taken part in the rescue. Diver Josie Barrett, who survived through sheer good fortune on the night, was there also and recalled his painful memories for the Press and TV cameras. One of the things that struck me was the manner with which members of the Grainne Uaile Sub Acqua Club carried themselves . Their message seemed to be: "Yes, we are suffering but for the sake of Michael we intend carrying on our work with even greater passion and diligence in the future". The Murphy family, which was rescued from the cave at Belderrig, were not present but they should not be forgotten. Their actions in visiting the cave in a small currach may not have been overly wise but they are victims too of the tragedy and must be suffering hugely.
