Bev's television double Mayo Dail Deputy Beverley Cooper Flynn is set for television stardom! She will make two appearances on the national network over the weekend. Popular Beverley will make her first appearance on RTE on Saturday evening (6.30p.m.) in 'The week in politics.' Then, on Monday evening, she will feature as a panellist on the 'Question and Answers' programme which is being broadcast from Westport. Chairman to the rescue The chairman of Castlebar UDC has been congratulated for his speedy action in having a fallen tree which was blocking the walks at Lough Lannagh removed over the New Year holiday. The compliment was paid by Collr Johnny Mee who said he found the fallen tree blocking the path and contacted the chairman. Almost immediately the chairman and Pat Healy went into action to remove the obstacle. "It was an extremely wet and windy day and it is a great credit to the council staff that it was removed with such haste," said Collr Mee. Support for Four Days Walks Castlebar Urban Council have been asked to provide a more helpful role in the organisation of the International Four Days Walking Festival in the town. The organising committee wrote to the council about the matter in a bid to enlist greater community support. Members of the council agreed to hold a special meeting with the walking festival committee at an early date. Monument to mark 1798 A proposal is being mooted to erect a monument at Staball, Castlebar, to mark the 200th anniversary of the Races of Castlebar. Senator Paddy Burke raised the matter at a meeting of the authority. Tribute to Josie Garvey, Lucan Street The chairman of Castlebar Urban Council has paid a special tribute to Josie Garvey, Lucan Street, Castlebar, whose death has taken place. Mr. Blackie Gavin said the deceased was a kind and courteous neighbour. She was a member of one of the town's oldest and most respected families and possessed a tremendous history of the locality. Mr. Gavin said he spent many hours, as a youth, in Josie's home listening to the many stories she told about her years working at Castlebar Bacon Company. Mr. Johnny Mee, seconding the vote of sympathy to the Garvey family, said the deceased was a very gentle and good-natured woman. Kudos for council staff The outdoor staff of Castlebar Urban Council have been praised for responding to a call-out on Christmas day. Mr. Johnny Mee, a member of the authority, lauded the efforts of Pat Healy, town foreman, and Blackie Gavin, town plumber, in removing a tree which collapsed onto the public roadway at Newport Road. "It was a particularly bad day weather-wise. But great credit is do to our staff for responding to the call so quickly," added Mr. Mee. Lane to be resurfaced soon The pot-holed condition of Cavendish Lane has come in for severe criticism from motorists in the town. So much so that a complaint was raised with Castlebar Urban Council by Mr. Johnny Mee, a member of the authority. He was told the roadway would be resurfaced in the coming weeks. Votes of sympathy Castlebar Urban Council passed votes of sympathy with the Bourke family, St. Patrick's Avenue; Fitzgerald family, Dooleague, Islandeady; McNicholas family, Ballyheane; Mulloy family, Turlough Road; and the Armstrong family, Ballina, on their recent bereavements. |
