New EPA headquarters runs into hitch
11 February 1998
By Tom Kelly
The construction of the new £1m. headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency in Castlebar has run into a hitch. A major water main from the Lough Mask supply, serving Mayo General Hospital, is located on the site. Now moves have been undertaken to divert the pipe which will enable building work to recommence.
A spokesman for Mayo County Council denied claims that the erection of the new EPA centre would be delayed for any considerable length of time.
Work on diverting the problem pipe would be completed by Friday and the contracting firm, Sean McDonnell Limited, would move back on site immediately.
Said Mr. Padraig Hughes, county secretary: "It is not accurate to say the project has been delayed in any way. The facility will be completed on schedule."
The decision to re-direct the pipe was made on the advice of Castlebar Urban Council which granted planning permission for the development a number of months ago.
When completed, the new EPA headquarters will serve the entire Western region. It replaces the existing centre located at the rear of the Courthouse, Castlebar.
