New Sponsor for Mayo team
11 February 1998
By Aiden Henry
Mayo gaelic footballers will have a new logo on their jersies in this year's championship.
Staunton's Sports, which has a chain of shops throughout the region, has successfully tendered for the sponsorship contract.
It is believed the deal is worth the cash strapped Mayo GAA Board, in the region of £200,000.
Mr. Jimmy Staunton, whose highly successful company has a headquarters in Castlebar, said yesterday that he was delighted to have clinched the sponsorship deal.
He said the company had a good relationship with John Maughan and the Mayo team over the years and had been actively involved with teams at all levels in the county for the past fifteen years.
The logo on Mayo shirts this year will read "Staunton's Intersport".
Mr. Staunton paid tribute to previous sponsors, Genfitt of Kiltimagh. And, in a statement, Genfitt Managing Director, Laurence McEllin confirmed they would not be renewing their sponsorship and wished all Mayo teams every success for the future.
