Major jobs boost on way

By Tom Kelly

A £2m. investment is to be made in the Volex plant in Castlebar with the creation of an additional 100 jobs over the next eighteen months.

The firm, which is involved in the production of computer interconnect cables for the worldwide market, has confirmed plans to build a major extension to the existing factory at Breaffy Road in the town.

The company has acquired a 3.28 acres site at a cost of £131,200 from Mayo County Council to facilitate the expansion of Volex's existing operations.

Mr. Michael Newell, general manager, last night announced the American owned enterprise was carrying out the extension to enable the firm break into new markets.

Volex was also planning to move into the manufacture of higher technology systems in what represents a major initiative by the company.

Mr. Newell said the workforce at the Castlebar operation would increase from 300 to 400 when the new extension was up and running in the year 2000.

He said: "We hope to get construction work underway as soon as possible. An application for planning permission will be submitted with Mayo County Council very shortly."

Volex Interconnect Systems Limited has grown extensively since being first set up in Castlebar in the late eighties.

The news of the extension, which will be as big as the existing plant, is a considerable boost to the economy of Castlebar and surrounding areas.

It follows on from the opening a number of months ago of the APC plant on an adjoining site which will provide over 400 jobs when fully operational.
