Newport handicapped centre hit by -- DRY ROT
18 February 1998
By Tom Gillespie
A CENTRE which has been catering for mentally handicapped adults in Newport is under threat --- from dry rot.
For the past twenty years the old Convent of Mercy building in the town has been used by the Western Care Association.
At present 32 people are looked after there on a daily basis. But a new home will have to be found immediately for twenty of them.
Western Care's Service Director, Mr. Dave Joyce said the building has been examined by their engineers last week who found that part of the house was 'severely infected with dry rot and was causing structural defects'.
Mr. Joyce added: "We have no option but to vacate in the short term. We will have to relocate the group of 20 immediately while the other can remain following some minor alterations.
"We are looking at a number of possibilities and we are consulting with the local Western Care branch and with parents. Our prime concern here is the actual service users. We are looking at what is the best for them."
Local Senator Frank Chambers said he understood that there were difficulties in relation to the old structure
"I understand Western care are at the moment considering options that might be suitable for the accommodation of the residents. I hope some solution is found quickly."
