Objection to major Mulranny hotel project
4 March 1998
By Tom Kelly
An objection has been lodged to An Bord Pleanala against the decision of Mayo County Council to grant planning permission for a multi-million pounds hotel development in Mulranny.
An Taisce, the National Trust of Ireland, claim the proposal by Golden Park Developments Limited to carry out a major renovation and upgrading of the former Great Southern Hotel was contrary to the proper planning and development of the area.'
The company was given the go-ahead to build 20 apartments, multi-purpose hall and leisure centre, swimming pool, restaurant, kindergarten, lodge, 20 holiday homes and a snack bar on the site.
They also planned to restore the disused station building and lay a railway tunnel.
In her appeal, Ms. Jeanne Meldon, national planning co-ordinator with An Taisce, said it was accepted that the buildings required a use given that the hotel had been vacant since 1993.
"Having regard to the sensitive location of the site in visual terms, its proximity to designated areas of international conservation significance and its location within Mulranny village, we urge An Bord Pleanala to only permit a proposal of significantly more modest scale."
Ms. Meldon added the development would place inordinate and unsustainable demands on local infrastructure, particularly sewerage and water supply facilities.
"It would also seriously threaten the integrity and future of the tourism industry in the Mulranny area."
