Courthouse £3m. upgrading in jeopardy
A proposal to carry out a £3m. upgrading of the courthouse in Castlebar is being put in jeopardy.
The Department of Justice wants to take over the facility before undertaking the major refurbishment programme. But the department is reluctant to compensation Mayo County Council adequately for handing over the building.
Mr. Alex Fleming, assistant county manager, said the council would be at the loss of some office space if the take-over proceeded.
Alternative accommodation will have to be provided for our staff based at the courthouse, and this will cost a considerable sum of money. We cannot hand over the courthouse to the Department without being compensated.
This is a matter that needs to be addressed before work can start on renovating the existing facility.'
