May hearing likely for Tooreen cement issue

25 March 1998

By TOM SHIEL

A DECISION is expected later this week on whether there will be a full Bord Pleanala oral hearing into the Tooreen Cement Factory issue.

If an inquiry is decided on, an Inspector will be an appointed with the hearing taking place in Mayo at a Mayo venue, most likely Aras an Chontae, Castlebar.

Meanwhile, Tooreen Action Group has highlighted locally media reports from the United States which indicate that the incidence of Downs Syndrome within a 20 mile radius of a cement factory in Texas is four times higher than normal.

The Action Group says this vindicates their view that the emissions from the cement factory will not just affect Tooreen, Kilkelly and adjoining villages but also towns further afield such as Claremorris, Swinford, Kiltimagh, Ballaghaderreen, Knock, Tubbercurry, Ballymote and even Castlebar.

"We saw recently how dust from the Sahara travelled thousands of miles to Ireland so its not surprising that a factory can give out emissions which will travel at least dozens of miles", Action Group Chairman, Peter Cassidy said yesterday (Tuesday)
