Final referee condemned by Mayo VEC

GAA
1 April 1998

A MEMBER of Mayo Vocational Education Committee, Mr. Padraig Cosgrove, criticised the referee in last Sunday's All-Ireland Vocational Schools Junior Football Final between St. Brendan's, Belmullet, and Boher Bui, Cork. He claimed the Dublin official, Mr. Joe Woods, did not punish serious fouling in the match.

Said Mr. Cosgrove: 'It was more like a tug-o-war match than a football game.' He called on the G.A.A. to take a serious look at the appointment of referees for big matches.

Another member of the authority, Mr. Liam Coady, called on the people of Castlebar to get behind Davitt College in their effort to win the All-Ireland Vocational Schools Senior Final Replay against Holy Trinity, Cookstown, next Saturday.

He said he was extremely disappointment that flags were not put up in the town before the drawn tie and the situation should be rectified before the replay. 'When St. Gerald's College reached the All-Ireland Colleges final last year, the town was covered in the St. Gerald's College. The same should be done for Davitt College,' he added.
