File going to DPP on fatal hit and run
BY TOM KELLY
A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in respect of a fatal hit and run accident at Sheeaune, Westport.
A 15-years-old transition year student, Muiréad Sadler, was killed when struck by a vehicle on April 4th last after alighting from a taxi near her home.
Garda Superintendent Frank Gunter confirmed last night (Tuesday) that a file was being submitted to the DPP later this week following the completion of their investigations into the incident.
The DPP will decide if charges are brought against a motorist suspected of being involved in the death crash.
In a separate development, a demand has been made on Mayo County Council to begin works on reducing the threat of the death-trap roadway at Sheeaune.
Mr. Seamus Hughes complained there was no pedestrian margin at the location where the tragedy occurred.
He called for the provision of a footpath and pedestrian crossing as a matter of extreme urgency.
"The National Roads Authority should be made aware of the seriousness of the situation," he added.
Mr. Michael Ring, TD, also came out strongly in demanding action on Westport's roadway of death.
"This is one of the busiest and most dangerous roads in the county and pedestrians, young and old, should be properly protected. Action must be taken before there is a further death."
