The series was filmed by BBC Northern Ireland and RTÉ with Parallel Films and the Irish Film Board.

During September, October and November last filming of the series took part in Mayo with the Military Barracks, Castlebar being the headquarters for the crew.

Several locals were recruited as extras and scenes were filmed in Castlebar, Westport Bertra Beach, Manulla Station and Islandeady.

The sound stage was build in the mess hall of the Military Barracks and the entire interior of the house used in the film was reconstructed insider the mess hall.

The filming resulted in major spin-off to local hotels and guesthouses. Knockranny House Hotel, Westport, Daly's Hotel, Castlebar and the Quay Apartments in Westport were occupied by the actors and crew for the duration of the filming in Mayo.

According to Caitríona Ward a PR spokesperson for the group they are very pleased with the end product.

"It is a tremendous book and it transformed very well to film", she said.
