Telegraph scoops national GAA award

GAA SPORTS coverage in the Connaught Telegraph is tops in the country and that official.

Our Sports Editor, John Melvin will be presented with the prestigious GAA McNamee Award for the Best article on All-Ireland Series in a provincial newspaper for 1997.

He will receive the accolade from the president of the GAA, Mr. Seosamh MacDonncha, at a reception in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin on Saturday night.

In all nine awards will be handed over, one of which goes to Mayo born journalist Liam Horan of the Irish Independent who is the winner in the Best article on all-Ireland series in a national newspaper.

Liam, from the Neale Road, Ballinrobe, commenced his journalistic career with the Connaught Telegraph.

The awards, the GAA National Communications Awards, are called after the late Pádraig McNamee, former president of the association, chairman of the GAA Commission (1969-1971) and a member of the RTE Authority.

The selection of the Connaught Telegraph is acceptance that we are the top provincial newspaper in Ireland when it comes to matters of GAA.

Then we were thirty-four years young when the GAA was founded in 1884 and we have been covering every aspect of the organisation and its games ever since.

Connaught Telegraph Editor, Tom Gillespie in congratulating Mr. Melvin on his national achievement said it was due recognition of the many years of dedication he has given to the code.

He said: "It s proof positive that the Connaught Telegraph and out sport department is to the forefront for incisive sports coverage."
