Former players are front runners for Mayo GAA job
27 May 1998

The position of manager of the Mayo senior football will not be filled until the end of August at the earliest if John Maughan opts out after three years in the job.
That's the view of Mr. P.J. McGrath, chairman of the Mayo County G.A.A. Board.
Speaking exclusively to the Connaught Telegraph from his home last night, Mr. McGrath confirmed that if Maughan steps down, as he indicated following last Sunday's championship defeat at the hands of Galway, his successor will not be appointed before the end of the summer.
Said Mr. McGrath: "We have to wait for John's decision first. In the meantime we will be keeping a close look at the Mayo club championship where we hope to spot some new talent."
Maughan, the Castlebar -based Army officer, will announce his decision to quit within the next two weeks.
He said: "I will think about my position in the coming weeks. After discussing it with my wife and family, I will announce my decision. Maybe now is the time to go."
Reading between the lines, Mayo supporters can expect a new man to be in charge of the Mayo team when the National League starts next October.
There is already a lot of speculation about who might get the job. At this early stage, three former Mayo players, T.J. Kilgallon, Peter Forde and Martin Carney, are the front runners. Other names linked with the position include Billy Fitzpatrick, Willie Joe Padden and Tomas Tierney.
But the county board may be prepared to headhunt a big name from outside the county.
Meanwhile, McHale Park, Castlebar, could be the venue for the Connaught final if Galway and Sligo reach the decider.
