MAC IS BACK AS BURRISHOOLE BRUSH ASIDE WESTPORT

WELCOME INN LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

Piaras O'Raghallaigh reports

Westport . . . 0-9 Burrishoole . . .1-13

An outstanding performance from Colm McManamon at midfield for Burrishoole paved the way for a seven point victory for the men from Newport. McManamon covered acres of ground as well as landing four points from play.

While Burrishoole dominated the opening half, they only had a one point lead at the interval - 0-6 to 0-5.

Westport got the opening score after six minutes when Pat Grady latched onto a Pat Holmes pass. Conor Dever put Westport two up with an excellent point from pay five minutes later.

Two points from Colm McManamon and Sean Mulchrone had the sides level again 15 minutes into the game. Before the break, Niall Chambers and Colm McManamon shot five points between them to leave Burrishoole ahead at half-time.

Chambers was very alert on the half-forward line and he cause all kinds of problems for the Westport half-back line. The other Westport scores in the first half, coming from Pat Grady and Eddie Walsh.

While the opening period may have been close and keenly fought, the second half was a dour encounter.

Burrishoole shot the all important goal five minutes into the second half when a well worked move found the sprightly Alan Moran. Moran solo-ed to the edge of the small square before blasting to the Westport net for a great goal.

Burrishoole added points at ease from Sean Mulchrone, Niall Chambers, Alan Moran again and an excellent point from Ronan Loftus. Westport were stuck to the ground for the entire second half and the usually dependable Pat Holmes at centre half-back never got into this lacklustre game.

Late points from Sean Scott, Conor Dever and Pat Grady did little to encourage a late rally, Burishoole were home and dry long before the final whistle.

Best for Westport were PJ Foy and Sean Scott in defence, Martin Calvey tried hard at midfield while up front Westport were once again always stuck for options, Pat Grady and Michael Killeen tried hardest.

Colm McManamon, Eamonn Callaghan, Alan Moran and Ronan Loftus were best for an improving Burrishoole side.

Westport edge out Islandeady in West Junior

by Piaras O'Raghallaigh.

WEST MAYO JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Westport . . .0-9 Islandeady . . .2-1

Westport deservedly won this closely fought and entertaining game played in atrocious conditions at Westport on Saturday evening last.

Playing with the aid of the breeze, Westport lead at half-time by 0-6 to 0-1. Martin Gill was the main marksman for Westport, he kicked four points in the opening half. Islandeady got their only point after five minutes when Tommy Gibbons shot over after collecting the ball from a Brendan Horan free 30 yards out. However with the Westport backs in fine form, this proved to be the only point that Islandeady were to get for the entire game.

Westport, playing on their home sod, scored some excellent points from play and from frees. Just before the interval Westport hit a purple patch and scored three excellent points from play. Padraig Heraty, Pat Gavin and Martin Gill scoring points.

Islandeady were a much improved team at the start of the second half and if it wasn' t for some wayward shooting they should have clawed their way back into this game much sooner. Westport centre half-back, and man-of-the-match Paul Sammon, shot the opening score in the second half when he ran at the Islandeady defence and scored an individual point from play.

However the six point lead was short lived. In the eight minute, Tony Collins drove home an excellent goal for Islandeady after a wonderful move up the field. Ger Noone, Brendan Horan and Collins linking up well before the full-forward shot to the left of the helpless Sean Hoban in the Westport goal.

Four minutes later Islandeady were level, this time a goal mouth scramble resulted in the referee awarding a controversial goal to Islandeady after he believed the ball crossed the line. The Westport defenders and goalkeeper were adamant that the ball hadn't crossed the line, however the decision stood after the referee consulted with the umpires.

The Westport back room team were quick to react to the Islandeady resurgence and the introduction of Piaras Ó Raghallaigh and Eddie Walsh swung the balance in their favour again. Two late points from a free from Martin Gill and an excellent 40 yard point from Paul O'Malley gave Westport a deserved two point victory at the end.

Best for Westport were Paul Sammon, Pat Coughlan, Padraig Heraty and Martin Gill. Islandeady had good performances from Tony Collins at full-forward, Ger Noone, Declan Conway and Ronan Collins.

Westport: Sean Hoban, Pat Coughlan, Colm Forrestal, Nellie McLoughlin, Ciaran Cortney, Paul Sammon (0-1), P.J. Foy, Padraig Heraty (0-1), Pat Gavin (0-1), Michael Foy, Paul O'Malley (0-1), Martin Conway, Martin Gill (0-5) and Danny O'Toole. Subs: Piaras O'Raghallaigh.
