Story: Deirdre Kelly

Cuilmore Post Office near Newport is to cease trading after being run by the Doherty family for over a century.

Its closure at the end of the month will see the end of the family's association with An Post which has a history that is probably unique to this area.

The Post Office will shut its doors for the last time on June 26 when Mrs. Bridget Doherty (pictured above) who currently runs the business with her husband Peter retires. And, she says, there will be no Post Office to service Cuilmore and the neighbouring villages unless someone else decides to take it over.

The Doherty family's association with the business started 102 years ago when Peter's father set up the first ever Post Office in Cuilmore.

He handed the business on to his wife who in turn gave the reigns over to her son Peter. He and his wife Bridget have successfully run the Post Office for a number of years.

According to Mrs. Bridget Doherty none of her family were interested in keeping the Post Office going so the services it offers will cease unless someone outside the Doherty family decides to take it over.

And she says there will be no celebratory function to mark the closure, just a quiet closing of the door on a unique piece of Newport history.
