Inspirational Gallagher turns game for Rovers

WELCOME INN HOTEL MAYO LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Achill Rovers ......................... 2 Glenhest Rovers .................... 0

Achill Rovers maintained their position at the top of the Mayo League Premier Division with a convincing victory over Glenhest Rovers.

Despite missing a number of key players through injury and other factors, they deserved to take all three points in a match which swung from end to end.

Colm Gallagher, switched from his regular goalkeeping role to the centre of defence, produced a top class performance to keep the Rovers defence at bay in a hectic opening period.

It required a stroke of inspiration by defender Vincent Gallagher for Achill to take the lead midway through the half.

The talented full-back drove a left-footed drive from 30 yards into the roof of the Glenhest net past goalkeeper, James Gillespie.

Glenhest came fighting back, but luck was not on their side. Mark Rowland had an effort cleared off the line, while Ger Garavan was denied from close range.

Rovers sealed victory in the 72nd minute when a Mark Corrigan corner-kick was headed in at the far post by Martin McGing.

The result left Glenhest struggling at the bottom of the table with just one point out of 12.

Gallagher off to America

Kieran Gallagher, Achill Rovers's skilful winger, is out of the club's Mayo League Premier Division bid until August after jetting out to America for a working holiday.

His loss is a significant one for a club already without a number of experienced players.

Ballyglass get momentum going in search of third title

WELCOME INN HOTEL PREMIER DIVISION

Lacken United ............................ 3 Ballyglass ................................ 6

Ballyglass have started well in their quest for a third consecutive Mayo League Premier Division title.

They registered their second win of the series with victory over Lacken United in a nine-goal thriller at Belleek.

In a league match which was rescheduled following the granting of a walk-over to Ballyglass by Sligo's M.C.R in the semi-final of the Michael Byrne Cup, Lacken got off to a flying start with a goal after 15 seconds through Brian Forde.

John Noonan, restored to the Ballyglass side, equalised within ten minutes, while Paul Connolly gave the defending champions the lead in the 22nd minute with a brilliant volley following good work down the right by James Regan.

John Lavin made it 2-2 within moments for Lacken, but the Ballyglass lead was restored before half-time when Kevin Connolly was in the right place at the right time to hammer home a shot by Noonan which had rebounded off the crossbar.

Ballyglass killed off the Lacken challenge with two goals in swift succession early in the second half by Kevin Connolly and John Noonan.

Paul Tighe reduced the margin for Lacken, but Ballyglass sealed a fine win with a sixth goal from the boot of Paul Connolly.
