Radio documentary on "House of Prayer"

A radio documentary which explores the circumstances leading up to the closure earlier this month of the "House of Prayer" on Achill Island will be broadcast on Mid and North West Radio tomorrow (July 30th) after the midday news.

"Unanswered Prayers" is the title of the 40 minute programme. It charts the rise and apparent fall of the House of Prayer which was opened by Mrs. Christina Gallagher in 1993.

Achill Fund Raiser

A Fund raising dance in aid of St. Colman's Nursing Unit, Achill will be held the Wavecrest ballroom, Achill on Wednesday night next (August 5) when music will be provided by Mick Flavin. Doors open at 10p.m. and admission is £5 and all are welcome.

New island ferry

A new ferry linking Inishturk Island to the Mayo and Galway mainland was launched on Monday. The 42 foot Lady Marlyn will cut the journey time in half to just over 30 minutes.

Skipper Jack Heanue operates the ferry service from Roonagh (Mayo) and Cleggan (Galway) and he also runs the Caher Star on the same route. Both ferries are licensed to carry twelve passengers.

Revived Innisbiggle Festival

A winkle eating competition will be part of the fun and festivities at the revived Summer Festival on Innisbiggle Island on August Monday The day will include a childrens' sports and a Bouncing Castle. The O'Connor School of Irish Dancers will be high-stepping it out for the occasion.

Sod-turning on Achill Island

A welcome step will be made today (Wed July 29th) in the provision of a Residential Centre for older people on Achill Island.

Dr. Tom Moffatt TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health, will travel to Achill to perform the official sod-turning ceremony.

The site is adjacent to the Church at Achill Sound. When completed, the unit will provide 30 residential places for older people together with day-care facilities and a hospice suite.
