Opposition to Esat mast at Ballina Garda Station
By JOHN MELVIN A PROPOSAL by Esat Digifone to erect a communications mast at Ballina Garda station will be strongly opposed, a member of Ballina urban council has stated. A planning application for a 36 metre mast with additional antennae and cabin has been submitted to Ballina Urban Council and is to be raised at their next meeting. Mr Pat Diamond, a member of the council, who, along with fellow councillor, Mr Terry McCole, was involved in preventing the erection of a similar mast near Lough Talt close to Bonniconlon said he would certainly be opposing the application and would also be querying the decision by the ESB to install extra communications equipment on existing facilities at Dillon Tce in Ballina. "I understand there are very serious health risks involved with both the Esat mast and the equipment installed by the ESB for which no planning permission had to be sought," he said. Objections to the proposal for the erection of the mast beside the Garda station at Walsh Street, Ballina, are expected from local residents and other groups in the town, while it is also understood that some members of the Garda are not entirely happy with the proposed mast. Mr Diamond said he would have serious reservations about allowing such a mast given the controversy they had created in many other areas.
