Chairman moves to resolve housing 'cock-up'
BY TOM KELLY The chairman of Castlebar Urban Council has moved to resolve the growing controversy over a housing 'cock-up' at Lucan Street in the town. A row blew up when the building line of a local authority house at the location was breached in an engineering error. Now Mr. Johnny Mee has raised the matter with Mr. Alex Fleming, assistant county manager, pointing out to him the house was out of line and would have to be moved back. "I also spoke to the senior engineer in the roads section of Mayo County Council and was told the house was out of line with the guidelines for roads drawn up by the council ten years ago," said Mr. Mee. "If the house isn't moved back the required distance it will hang like an albatross around the necks of the councillors for years to come and will be cited when future planning applications are being discussed. "The Urban Council cannot breach the line advocated by the County Council. The house should be moved back immediately and if this is not done I will put in a section four notice to have it shifted. It is a terrible piece of planning which is bringing the council into disrepute." There is also disappointment that development is allowed to take place on the site in the first place. A derelict building had been demolished at the location a number of weeks ago, and it had been hoped that the site would be used to widen the roadway and provide a proper roundabout structure at the Lucan Street/Charles Street junction. Senator Paddy Burke raised the matter at a meeting of Mayo County Council. He said it was a disgrace what was allowed to happen at the location.
