Two men remanded following Castlebar drugs bust
TWO men have been remanded on charges of possessing a quantity of cannabis resin with the intention of selling it to others. They were Jason Daly (27) with an address at Thomas Street, Castlebar and Brian Daly (50) with an address at Ramsbottom in Bury, Lancashire. Both had been detained in Castlebar last week under the provisions of the Criminal Drug Trafficking Act 1996. On Saturday evening they appeared at a special sitting of Castlebar Court where evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Detective Garda Denis Gallagher. Jason Daly was remanded on bail by Judge Daniel Shields to Castlebar Court on September 16th on a cash bail of £1,000 and an independent surety of £1,000. Brian Daly was remanded in custody to appear at Ballina Court yesterday (Tuesday). Bail was set at an independent surety of £500 plus a cash surety of £2,000. Ms. Mary O'Brien, solicitor, for Brian Daly applied to the Court on Saturday that £2,000 taken by the Gardai from her client be used for bail purposes. But this application was rejected by Judge Shields after Garda Inspector Jerry Henry objected on the grounds that the cash could be the proceeds of crime. Meanwhile when Brian Daly appeared at Ballina Court yesterday and he remanded on bail to Castlebar court in September 16. He surrendered his passport and was ordered to report daily to Castlebar Garda Station. An application by Ms. O'Brien to allow her client to return to England until the case was heard was refused by the Judge Shields. Ms. O'Brien said her client had no means of support in this country and was employed in the UK.
