Seamus Hughes to opt out of political life
By DEIRDRE KELLY Westport -based former T.D. Seamus Hughes is to quit public life in a move that will shock his many supporters. The popular solicitor who is also a member of Mayo County Council has sent a letter to supporters informing them of what was "possibly the most difficult decision of my life." While he will no longer hold public office, Mr. Hughes intends to play a fully constructive role within the Fianna Fail party structure and continue to work among the community he has served for the past fifteen years. Mr. Hughes said it had been a privilege for him to serve as a public representative - first on Westport Urban Council, from 1984 to 1991. Mr. Hughes was elected to Mayo County Council in 1985 and will continue to hold his seat until next year. His successful career in politics also brought him to Leinster House and he had one term as a T.D. from 1992 to 1997. During his political career Mr. Hughes was Chairman of Westport Urban Council and Vice-Chairman of Mayo County Council. He was Chairman of the authority's Finance Committee and was also in the VEC for five years. Over the past number of months he had reflected on past political events and made the decision not to stand for election to public offices. "Instead I will support, in whatever way possible, those persons within our party who will strive to serve our party and the people of Mayo as elected public representatives in the future." Mr. Hughes said he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his time at the forefront of the political arena. It was his main interest in life and involved "community work in the widest sense of the word." The decision to leave after 15 years had not been easy and was one that he had made alone. However from his position as a solicitor, Mr. Hughes said he would continue to help and work in the community. "I have still a strong community role to play, and that is my wish."
