Objections to Respond Traveller house scheme

RESIDENTS in the Breaffy Road area of Castlebar are to launch a petition objection to plans by the voluntary housing agency Respond to the erection of four single-unit dwellings in the area, some of which are to be allocated to travelling families.

Householders and businesses in the area are up in arms over the move and have accused Respond of attempting to get planning permission for the development by stealth.

The houses are earmarked for a site close to the entrance to Davitt House and the newly erected Women's refuge Centre.

A spokesman for the objectors said: "No communication whatsoever has been made by respond to the residents or businesses of the area as to the purpose of the dwellings and the planning application procedures have been conducted in such a way that local awareness is at a minimum."

The residents say the development is totally unsuitable for this area of the town where there are young children, widowed and retired people and many living alone.

One of the major concerns is the development will hinder negotiations for the proposed Digital Park close by and the expansion of other industries already set up there.

All householders and businesses in the Breaffy Road, Maryland area have been circulated with a document highlighting the domestic and business concerns of the locals.
