Box office war simmering again
THE long-running Cinema box office battle in Castlebar has started simmering again, writes TOM KELLY. Local development firm, Cavendish Lane Properties Limited, have lodged a new application to Castlebar Urban Council seeking the go-ahead for a four screen cinema complex, three shop units and two floors of apartments on a site along the Dunnes Stores Spur Road at Knockacroghery and at the rear of the old Protestant graveyard. The company, which is backed by the Ward Anderson firm of film distributers in the £2.3m. proposal, was twice granted permission for a six-screen cinema at the location, but was overruled on both occasions following appeals lodged to An Bord Pleanara by local businessman, Mr. Joe Mulroy. Mr. Mulroy has the full approval of An Bord Pleanala for plans by his company, Barcastle Industries Limited, to build a £1m. multiplex facility at the rear of the Roller Bowl complex at Gorteendrunagh on the grounds of the old Bacon Factory site.
