Maughan offered Mayo Civil Defence post
BY TOM KELLY THE manager of the Mayo senior Gaelic football team, John Maughan, is being lured away from his career as an officer in the Irish Army. Mr. Maughan, who guided his native county to two consecutive All-Ireland finals in 1996 and 1997, has been offered the post of Civil Defence Officer for Mayo. A high-ranking official of Mayo County Council confirmed that Mr. Maughan had been nominated for the position by the interview board. Mr. Padraig Hughes, county secretary, added that Mr. Maughan had not yet indicated whether or not he was accepting the full-time appointment. Aged 35, Mr. Maughan is currently employed as a Captain in the Irish Army based at Renmore Barracks in Galway. He lives with his wife, Audrey, and family at Ballynew, Castlebar. Mr. Maughan, who was recently appointed for another three years as Mayo football manager, is a partner in a new public house 'John Maughan's' which opened last year at High Street, Westport. The position of Civil Defence Officer for Mayo became vacant following the retirement earlier this year of Mr. Tim Duffy, Kilkelly, following 30 years service. Since his retirement, the post had been filled on an acting capacity by Mr. Jimmy Cahill, Charlestown, who had also applied for the position. |
