Former RTE presenter Crowley heads list of F.F. hopefulsSolicitor and radio broadcaster Aiden Crowley has informed Fianna Fail that he is willing to stand for the party in next June's Castlebar Urban Council elections. He made his position clear at a meeting of the local Cumann at which three other members expressed their interest in standing, namely Richard Wynne, Pat King and Michael Brophy. Their names will be put before convention on Sunday, March 7th, along with the party's three outgoing members of the authority, Sean Bourke, Blackie Gavin and Paul Ainsworth. The party has indicated it will be selecting six candidates for the race, so one of the declared members is going to lose out. Crowley is a member of the Castlebar legal firm, Egan & Daughter, Mountain View. He is married to Eanya Egan, acting Coroner for West Mayo and a former independent member and chairperson of Castlebar Urban Council. A native of Newport Road, he was a continuity announcer with RTE for many years before changing careers. He presents a current affairs programme, 'Saturday Forum,' on Castlebar Community Radio every Saturday morning. He was also employed by MWRfm for over a year. Should he be elected, he will have to resign, with great reluctance, from his radio work under IRTC rules. Richard Wynne, a member of one of the town's oldest and most respected families, is chairman of the Castlebar Informational Age Town Committee which has been responsible for securing over £1m. in technological investment in the town. He is chairman of Main Street Traders and is a Sergeant in the local 5th Motor F.C.A. Squadron. He has direct contact with nearly every voluntary club and organisation in the town, and will be seen as a very good candidate. Pat King, who lives at Hill View, Pound Road, is a long serving member of the bar staff of the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar. A former public relations officer of the local Cumann, he currently holds the position of joint treasurer. The King family has a long association with the licenced trade in Castlebar, and his father, Richard, formerly owned a public house at Spencer Street. Pat, an affable young man, has strong connections throughout the town, given him a splendid chance of being elected. Michael Brophy, who lives in St. Bridget's Crescent, was a founder member and former chairman of the local Residents Association. He has a long association with Castlebar Athletic Club, and is actively involved in trade union affairs at Castlebar Post Office where an on-going campaign is taking place for a new Post Office in the town. The three outgoing candidates, Sean Bourke, Blackie Gavin and Paul Ainsworth, are widely expected to be returned, and the party has targeted four seats in the election. |
