Mayo should be Hollywood of the
West
A CALL has been made on Mayo
County Council to establish a 'Screen Commission' to
promote the region as a the 'Hollywood' of Ireland.
It has come from Dail Deputy Enda Kenny who said such a
move would provide 'enormous benefits'.
Mr. Kenny has made the recommendation following the
publishing of the annual review of the Irish Film Board. The
report showed there are eight films currently in production
in Ireland. None of them have a Mayo location.
In 1998 one of nine productions 'Love and Rage' was
filmed in the Achill
area. While one TV drama series, John McGahern's 'Amongst
Women' was filmed at several locations here.
Deputy Kenny added:"I believe Mayo County Council should
form a group under the chairmanship of the relevant special
policy committee. It should invite people of expertise and
understanding of this business in the county to join this
committee and a prospectus should be prepared on the
advantages of mayo and on the opportunities that it presents
for investors and film companies."
