Lichens:

Lichens are greyish-green plants that grow on rocks, stones, soil, trees and bushes. It is two plants (algae; fungus) in one. There are four kinds:

1 . Encrusting Lichen

If the Lichen forms a greyish-green or orange crust. (seen on fallen branch or right after oak tree)

2. Leafy Lichen

If the lichen is flat or leaf-like. (opposite on the left)

3. Cup Lichen

If the lichen is covered with fruiting bodies that look like stems or funnel-shaped cups.

4. Branching Lichen

If the lichen is branched.

Lichens can grow where other plants would die, because the algae parts of the plant produce the food and the fungus part soaks up water from rainfall.

Many lichens can be used to make dyes. Lichens are slow growing and care should be taken not to damage them. Where present, they are indicators of the absence of air pollution.
